Independence Day is Over, but You Should Still Know How to Hang a Flag

If you didn’t know, there are all kinds of rules and regulations regarding the American flag! USA.gov put out information on how to properly display the flag, timely right before the Fourth of July, but it IS good information to have all the time, whether you have a flag hanging from your porch or your window. Here are some of the practices they outlined:

  • You are allowed to display your flag from sunrise to sunset, but if you choose to also display it at night, you need to make sure it is lit up.
  • If you have it hanging from a flag post on your porch, make sure the union (the blue corner with the stars) is placed at the peak of the staff. The only exception for this is for government-specified half-mass days.
  • If you have your flag hanging from a window, or on a wall, you should display it so that the union is on the top left.
  • Make sure there is nothing beneath the flag that it’s touching
  • On a street, the flag should be hanging vertically with the union to the north in an east/west street, or the union should point to the east if it’s hanging from a north/south street.
  • If it is on a vehicle or a boat, the flag should be placed on the right side. Never drape it over the hood, top, sides, or back

Make sure you know how to properly take care of your flag. If you’re storing it away, make sure it’s in a well-ventilated area. If the flag is damaged or worn out, you should burn it to dispose of it.

I was wondering today if  it’s disrespectful to wear the stars and stripes pattern as clothing with this morning’s video on Facebook.

What do you think?
