Rhemy Elsey is a fifth grader in the Peoria public school district. But Rhemy isn’t like the rest of his classmates, he is deaf and has been since birth.
He has an interpreter who goes to school with him, and helps him communicate with teachers and other students. But he still finds it hard making friends. So a bunch of Rhemy’s classmates decided to do something pretty amazing. They started a club where once a month, they skip recess to learn sign language.
Rhemy’s interpreter teaches the kids, and says they’ve already learned enough to have basic conversations with him. And everybody is having fun learning. The biggest difference is Rhemy is making friends, becoming confident, and coming out of his shell.
