Veterans Homefront Drive Saturday, September 06, 2008
Support the families of our troops with the Veterans Homefront Drive on Saturday, September 6th at the American Legion Post 979, Airport Road in Bartonville. Proceeds benefit Central Illinois Military Family Readiness Programs. The ride sign in will be from 11 am- 1 pm. For more information on the ride sign in, visit www.microbikers.com. Benefit Ride for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Saturday, September 06, 2008
There will be a benefit ride for Leukemia Lymphoma Society on Saturday, September 6. Registration is from 3-4:30 p.m. at Edwards Tap (10004 W Powder Mill Rd in Edwards, Illinois). All vehicles are welcome. Last vehicle will be in at 7:30 p.m. It costs $30 to participate in the 45 mile run. All procees to to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. There will be prizes, 50/50 and raffles.

National CFU Cultural Tour- St. David Sunday, September 07, 2008
Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge 367 of Canton will once again be a host on the National CFU Cultural Tour. On Sunday September 7, Slavonia Band, a tamburitza musical group from Zupanja, Croatia, along with vocalist, Stejpan Jersek, will present a concert at the Optimist Club in St. David IL. The concert will begin at 6:00 p.m. Admission will be $5 for adults; children will be admitted free of charge. There will be food available starting at 5:00 p.m. For $4 you can get a burger or bratwurst, chips, dessert, and coffee, tea and water. Soft drinks are $1. BYOB. Come support literacy by walking through the streets of literature: Rhett Butler Blvd., Curious George Way, Anne of Green Gable Place, and many more at Common Place’s 22nd Annual Walk for Reading on Saturday, September 13, at Common Place, 514 S. Shelley Street. Two routes will be available: a 5K “Novel” walk, and a 1 mile “Short Story” walk, both routes encompassing a stop at the Lincoln Branch Library. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m., with the Walk starting at 8:30 a.m. Registration is $20 for individual and $30 for family. Sponsorship is encouraged, as well as team participation. Common Place is a social service organization focusing on literacy, and is located on Peoria’s South Side. Common Place offers after school homework help and enrichment activities for children grades K – 12, summer youth programs for children ages 8 – 15 years, and adult one-on-one tutoring and small reading and math group classes.

A benefit for Jeremy Richards will be held on Saturday, September 13th from 4pm to 1 am at the AMVETS on Route 29 in North Pekin. There will be a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7. There will be araoke from Mixed Nuts Karaoke throughout the evening. There will also be an auction, raffle and bake sale. On July 1st Jeremy was diagnosed with empyema (infection) on the lining of his brain. He has undergone 3 brain surgeries and a sinus surgery all during the month of July. He is a restoration technician with Menold Restoration in Morton. He will be out of work for an undetermined amount of time.

On Saturday, September 27th, beginning at 10:00 a.m., the Illinois Mennonite Historical & Genealogical Society will hold Heritage Day 2008 at the Illinois Mennonite Heritage Center on Route 116 between Metamora and Germantown Hills. This family event is a celebration of our local pioneer and faith heritage, and will include games, special exhibits and programs. Demonstrations and hands-on activities will be ongoing throughout the day showing pioneer activities like weaving, caning, making apple butter, blacksmithing, corn shelling, and much more. Old fashioned games such has croquet will be featured. Visitors can enjoy popcorn and ice cream. Admission price is $5 per car. Door prizes will be announced throughout the day; grand prize will be a small quilt.

Foster Pet Outreach is a local non-profit organization whose main focus is to help provide for the well being of animals in our community. We believe that abandoned, injured, or neglected animals deserve the same care and concern as do our own companion animals. Animals are fostered in members' homes until they are permanently adopted.

This special black-tie event raises awareness to our organization and is our primary fundraiser for the year. The evening begins at 6:00pm at the Country Clubs of Peoria on Saturday, November 8th, 2008 Our emcee is Jim Barnett and the Jim Markum Swing Band will be returning again this year. The evening will start with six local “Celebrities” dancing with our Dance Specialists from Body Fitness with local “Celebrity” judges rating the score.
